How can you take an all-time classic live album and make it better? Sounds tough but Universal have decided to give it a go, and are tackling Humble Pie's classic album Performance:Rockin' the Filmore. The album was recorded and released in 1971, and was taken from four shows recorded over two days at Bill Graham’s legendary Fillmore East venue.

So how can you take an albm like this and give the fans something even better. Well one step is to completely remix and remaster the material, but that in itself isn't going to make it stand out, but what Universal have done is rather than remixing the original album they've taken the original recordings of all four shows and remixed and remastered them. Then the four shows have been put together into a box set, so instead of one CD containing the original album which was made up of parts from different shows, fans can now hear the original shows.

So what does this give us that we didnt have before? The answer is several things. For a start there are different versions of the songs that made up the album - "Four day creep", "I'm ready" and "I walk on gilded splinters" were played in all four shows, but the setlists were slightly different each time, so the other tracks were only played at some of the shows. Added to that you get all the banter from Steve Marriott. Each of the shows is presented on its own CD and is in the proper running order whereas the original album mixed things around - presumably to fit the space limits of vinyl best.

The new mixes were done under the supervision of members Peter Frampton and Jerry Shirley and sound superb - the quality really is excellent.

The CD booklet is excellent and is packed full of information about the band as well as detailed notes on each song that was played at the shows, with both Peter Frampton and Jerry Shirley giving their thoughts

Had this just been a remixed and remastered version of the original album it would have been nice but nothing really special, but by including the full recordings of each of the four shows this really has become an excellent release and is well worth adding to any music lovers CD collection.
