Def Leppard: Viva! Hysteria

Frontiers/BAM

English mega band DEF LEPPARD may well be past their prime, but the can still pack a place for a big show. In this case the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. In fact they even posed as the best DEF LEPPARD cover band in the world – DEAD FLATBIRD for two sets. On offer here is the entire “Hysteria album” plus selected cuts from their entire career.

The opening five are an amazing piece of evidence. “Women”, “Rocket”, “Animal”, “Love Bites” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me”, not many bands can put five in line like that! But the hightlights are not seldom earlier tracks like “Rock of Ages”, “Photograph”, “Mirror Mirror”, “Rock Brigade” and “High and Dry” who are given new lease of life in these spirited versions. Their ability to caress the listeners (at least the female ones) is well-documented in a string of hits and they sure make “Bringin´ on the Heartbreak” wriggle and weap. In short the songs that were not off “Hysteria” felt much better! In 29 songs you´re also bound to mismatch a few. “Don´t Shoot Shotgun” and the dreaded “Slang” and "Excitable" were not included for my sake, to put it gently. I still like DEF LEPPARD, not least when Joe says that there is a new song that describes the band and their journe when he announces “Undefeated”. This might be their second live in a row, but the new tracks on “Mirrorball” gave hope, not least “Undefeated”!
