For the past 11 years, the Orange Amplification Presents The Metal Hammer Golden Gods has been the party where the artists and the fans unite to hoist a beer to the great and good of metal. In its incredible history, some of the biggest names in metal have played, been honoured and most importantly, rubbed shoulders with the metalheads who love their music.

This year, Motörhead, one of the world’s most seminal rock bands, were the honoured recipients of the ultimate accolade, the Golden God Award. Handed over by Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver and Loaded bassist Duff McKagan, the award recognises those who have significantly contributed to, shaped and inspired the world of rock and metal. They also closed the show with a thunderous set to one of the most intimate crowds they have played in years.

In one of the most exciting and raucous live metal shows of the summer, Aussie rockers Airbourne, multi-million album selling Five Finger Death Punch, hugely influential Paradise Lost, and returned Nu Metal heroes Coal Chamber all played exclusive sets interwoven with the awards.

As ever, it all kicked off early with the HMS Hammer pre-party gig boat sailing 200 lucky competition winners up the Thames to the awards at IndigO2 with stripped back live performances from Norwegian six-piece Kvelertak, ex-Metallica bassist’s Jason Newsted’s band Newsted, New York hardcore/metal innovators Vision of Disorder, and leaders of the new British metal scene The Defiled and Heavens Basement.

Host Devin Townsend also handed force of nature and national treasure Brian Blessed the much-coveted Spirit Of Hammer Award. Won in previous years by Bill Bailey and Sir Christopher Lee, it celebrates those who encapsulate the passion and essence of what it is to be metal! Meanwhile grunge metallers Alice In Chains were named Icons of the Year, Thin Lizzy’s Scott Gorham collected the Riff Lord Award and Black Sabbath were on hand to collect two awards – for Best UK Band and Best Album for their first UK number one album in 43 years, ‘13’.

Alexander Milas, Editor-In-Chief of Metal Hammer says: “The Metal Hammer Golden Gods are the ultimate celebration of this astounding cultural phenomenon we call heavy metal, and we do it shoulder-to-shoulder with the fans who make it all possible. From honouring the lords of our world Black Sabbath and the crown princes of rock and roll Motörhead as well as today's most cutting-edge acts, there's simply no other event like it. In the spirit of tonight's Spirit Of Hammer winner Brian Blessed, the message of tonight's outrageously entertaining event is clear... metal's alive!"
