  Rock In Rio (Lisboa)

Rock in Rio is an event originating in Brazil. It is a series of music festivals held in three cities: Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Lisbon in Portugal and Madrid in Spain. In 2013, Buenos Aires, Argentina, will be the fourth, and in 2014 Mexico City, Mexico will be the fifth. Four incarnations of the festival were in Rio de Janeiro, in 1985, 1991, 2001 and 2011, five in Lisbon, in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012, and two in Madrid in 2008 and 2010. The shows were organized by Brazilian entrepreneur Roberto Medina. In 2011, Rock in Rio returned to its original location, Rio de Janeiro, with a new line-up of singers and groups. Rock in Rio has been the largest music festival in the world, with 1.5 million people in the first edition, 700,000 in both the second and fourth editions, about 1.2 million in the third, and about 350,000 people in each of the 3 Lisbon editions. Future editions of the festival will intercalate an international edition with one in Brazil, returning in Lisbon in 2012 and Rio in 2013. Pre-sales for the 2013 tickets started during the 2011 edition, and have already reached 15,000 orders. Its name is derived from "Rock in Rio de Janeiro"

For a Better World

Rock in Rio is a vehicle for communication of emotions and causes. Using music as a universal language, it uses its power to gather people, not only to thrill the audience, but also to impact the lives of those in need.

This feeling permeates the history of the festival, but took shape firstly in 2001. It was from the 3rd edition of Rock in Rio that the project For a Better World was consolidated; it was born to use the strength of the festival to motivate people to seek improvements in life through changes in their daily routine.

It started with an unprecedented movement. 98 million people came together around a simple gesture, but with a powerful meaning: 3 minutes in silence, all gathered together for a better world.

Since that edition, part of the income of the festival was used for social projects. Since then, over 11 million euros have been invested in actions that include: the planting of over 40,000 trees; building a school in Tanzania and a health center in Maranhão; educating 3,200 elementary school youngsters in Rio de Janeiro; the installation of 760 solar panels on 38 public schools in Portugal; installation of 14 sensory rooms in NGOs to improve the quality of life for thousands of children with disabilities in Portugal; donating more than 2,200 donated instruments to nearly 150 nonprofit institutions; building 10 music rooms in public schools and training in Luthier Assistant to 40 youngsters from one of the first communities in Rio de Janeiro to be pacified.

In addition, the organization has modernized the festival in order to reduce the environmental impact of its actions, either with an extensive investment plan for reduction of CO2 emissions of the event internationally, as in the audited compensation of 100% of the CO2 emissions of the festival. Still focusing on the environment, we provide a manual for companies working in the event so that sustainable practices become part of the routine of our suppliers; it was the first festival to recycle 100% of the waste produced, both in Brazil and in Portugal.

Music, awareness and action. That's Rock in Rio.
